ARTIST

As a visual artist, filmmaker and researcher I am exploring the concepts of time, site and creativity from a painterly perspective

My artwork has evolved out of working site-specifically and on international residences. I have engaged in a variety of collaborations with diverse practitioners such as artists, scientists, medical doctors and numerous other academics.

Through a variety of media primarily video, installation and photography, I have evolved my own poetic visual language that engages with the differences and similarities between painting, photography and film, creating a language of 'painterly reverie' that communicates difficult social issues with oblique, visual stanzas.

The concept of 'in-between-ness' in my PhD explored time, creativity and its relationship to video, site-specificity, and the philosophical complexities of arts and science collaborations.

'Karen has a collaborative ethos within the production of much of her work. Engaging with fellow visual artists including painters and applied artists she has also worked with sound artists and dancers. Unlike many of her contemporaries working with film, she manages to avoid being the recorder or editor of events, but is a true collaborator altering the work of others as in turn their input alters the vision within her work. The results are often touching, painterly and allow for the viewers own interpretation of events.'
